The volcanic soil of the Ecuadorian Andes in the area around the capital city of Quito offers optimum conditions to grow the world's finest roses. One of these areas is Mount Cotopaxi.
At an altidude of 3,500 meters above sea level, the climate is constant year round, with temperatures of around 4 degrees during the night and 20 degrees during the day. So there is no need for greenhouses - only foils to protect the roses from heavy rain or hailstorm are used to cover the roses.
Many of the farms do not use machinery, utilizing traditional means such as horse (or donkey) and cart.
A recent study from the Natural Resources Management Institute of Cranfield University shows that the CO2 emissions (including air freight!) for naturally grown roses which are imported are about one fifth compared to roses which are grown in greenhouses in Holland or the UK.
Roses grown in Ecuador are famous for their especially dense, velvety petals, thick, dark stems and large buds in the most amazing colours, with a bud size superior to 5cm (2 inches).
These buds will open gradually day after day, some of them slower, others quicker, depending on the variety of the rose and shape of the petals, until they reach full bloom, in which they remain for many more days.
With regards to stem length, they can grow up to 180cm. But you need to be quick - there are only about 100 stems of them per week, as they grow for almost 300 days.
We offer a unique choice of luscious colours, ranging from one colour to up to 5 different colours per rose.
We buy them directly from four farms. Our representative in Quito makes sure that only the highest quality is delivered to the airport before they board the plane to London. They therefore have a vase life of up to two weeks (please see our care tips section).
The roses have clean and shiny foliage and are free of toxic chemicals. All farms we work with are certified and constantly monitored by either German Flower Label Programm or Flor Ecuador, or both, to meet the highest social, labour and environmental standards.
Did you know that OnlyRoses operates a reforestation program in the Ecuadorian province of Chimborazo, planting new trees and thereby offsetting twice the amount of CO2 caused by importing the roses, and helping the indiginous people in the area to make a living by planting and looking after these trees.
